09. Thunder ⚡️
I knew I had to be creative with this one since you can’t really see thunder!
This is inspired by a totem pole carved by Mungo Martin in Thunderbird Park, Victoria, BC, Canada.
He was a master carver and a part of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation, the Indigenous people in the Vancouver Island area.
The best reference picture I found was this one on mapio.net (right)
I wanted to learn more about the meaning behind totem poles, and I came across this really interesting website that even included a lesson plan! (umistapotlatch.ca)
This is where I learned that figures on totem poles show a family’s history, representing supernatural beings who helped the family’s first ancestors in some way.
Pretty cool!!
