You would think the height of Mt Everest is pretty straightforward, right? Turns out there’s actually a big hooplah around it. For all the details definitely check out these sources:

One of the big roadblocks is accurately measuring sea level when you’re so far away from the sea. You also have to keep in mind tectonic plates shifting ever so slightly, causing the mountain to “grow".
I found the height of the South basecamp in Nepal on wikipedia. I chose this one because it’s most popular.
I also fell into an internet hole deciding what is the highest point on Earth. Depending on your definition of “highest,” it might not be Mt Everest. This NOAA.gov article has a useful graphic.
