23. Harvest 🌾

There is so much data on this topic I had trouble picking out what to showcase! This visual is from the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2018 Wasted Food Report (page 19).

It’s just so sad to read about all this food going to waste. But the good news is they are putting a lot of effort into quantifying this problem so we can hopefully come to useful solutions in the future.

I also think it’s helpful to contextualize this 103 million tons, because what does that even mean? I read that the amount of food wasted in America is around 30-40% of the food supply (on the U.S. Dept of Agriculture’s website).

That really brings it to life for me! That is just waaaay too high. We can do better.
