Why isn't there a Google Maps Wrapped?

I used my 2022 data to imagine what this could look like.

As someone who has opted in to location sharing, I'm emailed stats about where I go throughout the year. This information lives quietly in my inbox.

Spotify Wrapped is a hugely successful marketing campaign where millions of people share their yearly music data on Instagram.

Spotify provides easy to share, personalized graphics so their customers can showcase preferences with their music taste with friends.

These same people already use Instagram to share pictures of travels, so it only makes sense they would want to share a year in review of this as well.

By seeing the benefit of the Google Timeline in action, perhaps more people would turn the feature on so they could participate the next year.

It'd be a win win for Google and their customers!

The Process

I created a sketch in Procreate of my idea and then went to Google for my data. From the Google Timeline, I was able to download my location data for all of 2022. It came in 12 separate json files (one for each month).

Since this project is just a “Proof of Concept” I chose to convert these jsons to csv files, and analyze my data in Excel. I extracted city names and created a pivot table to find my top cities and countries.

For the maps, I loaded the data into Tableau. The final designs were made in Canva.
